"Sea & Sky" Project
Project
Granite North Brand Building, 2014
Los Angeles, CA United States
Artwork Budget: $32,500
Overview
Providing appeal, two blown glass lighting platter/pendant assemblies create focal points and lighting in both the east and west lobbies in the North Brand building. Each custom designed and fabricated pendant measures from 24-26" diameter with varying heights at approximately 44" high.
Goals
Color and form were inspired by late afternoon colors of the southern California sea and sky. These custom blown glass pendants are spring loaded using cables to meet earthquake standards and contain other earthquake resistant features such as a shatter resistant coating. This location was a remodel with limited ceiling height that restricted the depth of any art glass lighting overhead. There was a need for functional light integrated with art to complement the space. Large platters with minimal depth but broad width were grouped together to create an installation with large impact reflective of the areas natural wonders.
Process
The client proposed the idea of platter-like glass hanging from the ceiling, and Wimberley Glassworks worked that idea into an engineered design that complemented natural elements and incorporated two groupings of lit platter pendants.
Additional Info
This project uses Green technology, LED lighting and is UL listed. Presented as a turn-key installation, a schematic for light box placement was provided, with lighting installed by electricians.
